If you would like to take a trip to my country, Korea, Seoul would be the first city you want to visit. Seoul is quite big enough to take a few days to have a look around, and Myung-dong, one of the biggest shopping areas, is definitely included in your destinations. This shopping district has been continuously famous for tourists. Take public transportation whose system in Korea is one of the best in the world, which means you don't have to drive a car at all. Even though you can get to the place by bus, you should take a subway. It's a lot more convenient. Take the line 4 and get off at Myung-dong station or take the line 2 and get off at Euljiro Ipgu station. Either is fine; both of them are in Myung-dong area.
As soon as arriving in the area, you'll be surprised at so many people and stores. This place is always crowded with people regardless of Korean or foreign tourists. Myung-dong streets are like heaven for shoppers. Various types of brands on each side of the roads will be waiting for you. A few of them, especially cosmetic stores, make efforts to promote products, so you'll see employees speaking in Korean, Japanese, or Chinese in front of stores. You can also go shopping at Lotte Department Store located at near Eujiro Ipgu station, line 2. Myung-dong is full of retail stores, restaurants, and movie theaters, whatever. When you feel hungry after the enthusiastic shopping, a lot of street stalls will try to catch your eyes and nose with their food. Some are good, and some are bad; most of them are costly in my opinion.
Myung-dong is quite close to famous attractions: Cheonggyecheon, Insa-dong, and Palaces. I'll introduce some of them next time :) In my case, when I was in 20s, I enjoyed hanging out with my people to Myung-dong many times. But now, I have preferred quiet places rather than this crowded area. This place is not my first priority for free time any more.
I'm not sure if you'll like this area or not. If you'd like to see and experience Korean traditional culture or customs, I ask you to visit Insa-dong. However, if you have a plan to buy something or gifts for your people, Myung-dong is the very right place for the purpose.
In short, a picture is worth a thousand words. Come and See.
