Eggs contamination in Korea/살충제 계란 파동

I think that many Korean people will not eat eggs for quite a while. Fipronil eggs contamination that had happened in Europe happened in this country, too. A few days ago, Korean government that have banned the sale of all eggs decided to inspect all eggs farms nationwide because Fipronil and Bifenthrin, kinds of pesticide, were found in a couple of eggs from two farms in Gyeonggi province.

What are these?

Fipronil is used for livestock to kill fleas and mites but prohibited to chickens. It could damage your liver, bowels, and kidney if you take it a lot.

Bifenthrin is pesticide, used to kill lice on chickens and used 0.01mg per 1kg in domestic law. EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, has classified it as carcinogen.

Current situation

Three of biggest supermarkets in Korea: E-mart, Homeplus, and Lotte mart temporarily have stopped selling eggs from August 15. Many other stores also have stopped selling and placing an order for eggs. As of August 17, Korean government have completed inspections to 1,155 farms of total 1,239, and pesticide ingredients were found in 67 farmhouses. Among them, all eggs from 32 farms were completely discarded because of excess of the substances and contaminated eggs have been found in 13 farmhouses. The government said in a statement that total 45 farmhouses have been disapproved by the quality testing.

Aftermath

According to the news, any food including eggs or egg ingredients have excluded in schools and even zoo. Sections of eggs in supermarkets have been totally empty since contaminated eggs were found. To top it off, it looks like bakeries and chicken restaurants are likely to suffer heavily damage. A lot of people have wondered if fried chickens, one of most famous late-night foods, are okay to be edible without worries. Korean government definitely needs to take actions as quickly and precisely as it can.

In fact, environments of poultry farms aren't quite good. They're like factories; chickens are packed in a small area, vulnerable to contamination. If proper environments are given to chickens, they'll grow strong and healthy, which means the farms will rarely use the pesticide to kill fleas, mites, or lice. The thing is that it's highly hard to change the structures of poultry farms. I really hope that this shock won't last long with efforts from us all.

In short, we want to eat eggs.
