Tteokbokki, Most Typical Korean Snack

Having local food is one of the most interesting things to do when you visit foreign countries.

I've heard that many foreign people thought of Bulgogi as most famous or delicious Korean food in their mind. Yes, We Koreans like to eat it, but it's not the best because there are other tasty delicacies in Korea. Today I'd like you to know Tteokbokki, one of the most typical Korean snacks.

Tteokbokki is Stir-fried Rice Cake. You could easily see people having it at street snack bars like food truck or Tteokbokki snack bars in the buildings. A lot of people like this dish, especially young guys including kids. When I was a kid, I remembered eating this sweet and spicy food with several cups of water. Right. Tteokbokki is spicy and sweet food made of basically gochujang, the most traditional red pepper paste, and long thin rice cake, but there are various recipes to cook, which means you can put other ingredients like eggs, noodles, fish cake, or vegetables. I truly understand that this intense red-color makes you not only hesitate to have but imagine you'd have a bottle of water entirely. Tteokbokki deserves to try, though.

Where to eat

You can enjoy the food wherever you go in Korea regardless of big or small cities; find this letters, 떡볶이, which means Tteokbokki in Korean. That's the place where you're looking for. It you go to famous downtown places such as Myung-Dong or Gangnam station, there're many street food trucks along the streets and Tteokbokki snack bars in the buidlings, so choose one of the two. In my opinion, you should eat in the snack bars because many of them are selling Tteokbokki under their own brands. It means that Tteokbokki is made in hygienic conditions, and besides they have enough space for your group. Most of street food trucks, however, couldn't provide you seats; you have to eat it while standing.

How to order

This part sounds quite difficult if you don't know how to speak Korean. The way to order is just tell like, "Tteokbokki il inbun juseyo." It means that I'd like to have Tteokbokki for one person. If your group is more than two people, say "Tteokbokki i inbun juseyo."  The pronunciation of i is same as Alphabet E. Plus, I want you to eat fried shrimp, fried vegetables, or fried sweet potato that taste good with Tteokbokki. So, take an order for these, say "Twigim il inbun juseyo."

In short, it seems like Tteokbokki tastes hot and spicy to you, but it's not that spicy you can't endure. Tteokbokki taste good and sweet. Let's give it a try.
